Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is a security mechanism that is used to encrypt communications between two devices. One of the parts are often a web server (eg online shop) and the other is a web browser (eg Firefox or Chrome). The idea of encrypting the data sent to and from these two devices is that no one else on the network (usually the Internet) should to be able to eavesdrop or manipulate information. If you buy something on the internet, it is natural to use SSL to encrypt credit/debit card information for example.

Let’s Encrypt is a new Certificate Authority (CA) that offers FREE secure certificates that are just as secure as current paid certificates, and provide the same HTTPS protection to your website. Let’s Encrypt certificates are standard Domain Validation certificates, functionally identical to any certificate you’d spend money for elsewhere. You can use them for any server that uses a domain name, like web servers.

What is the difference between free and paid SSL?

Let’s Encrypt provides free domain validated SSL Certificate for your website. Commercial SSL Certificates provide all types of SSL including Domain Validated, Organization validated, EV SSL, wildcard or multidomain SSL. For websites that require more advanced SSL configurations we support custom certificates from any authorities.

How to activate my free SSL?

Svenska Domäner offers complete integration of free Let’s Encrypt SSL certificates to its hosting packages. Issuance and deployment of certificates is fully integrated with our hosting platform so no manual intervention is required in order to get and use one. Certificates are only valid for 90 days, after which they need to be renewed. No manual interaction is required and the renewal occurs automatically in the background.

Why SSL is important?

Security is a priority and it is always going to be a concern when it comes to the Internet and digital communication. Matter of fact, Google has recently announced that they plan to label all HTTP pages as non-secure in 2017 and are going to give priority to HTTPS sites in rankings.
